The Bible tells us: "Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see."
Now you may say to yourself: Bribes? OK, not a problem. There’s no foreseeable reason for me to take one.
But if we really look into it, the truth is that we get bribed all the time. We get bribed by appearances; we see with our immediate desires and we see those things that will quickly fulfill them.
For example, let’s say we are in a relationship, but then we see a handsome or beautiful person walking by and we happen to think about all the things this beautiful person could offer us. And then that little voice inside us says, “Well, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. I mean, who is going to know the difference if, you know, we slip away for a day or two? Who will know?”
This is a bribe. It is a bribing of our soul. We say to ourselves, “I’ll just take a little here and a little there, and nothing negative is going to happen. No one is going to get hurt.” But we’re wrong, and the ones who will be hurt the most is us. Because the problem is if and when we take the bribes, we are just creating more curtains between ourselves and truth.
